A Historic First for Plumstead: Township Welcomes Career Firefighters |
Four firefighters are helping usher in a new chapter for emergency response and public safety in Plumstead Township. |

Plumstead Township Fire Department carved a significant place in local history with the introduction of its first full-time firefighters, signaling a decisive evolution in fire protection for the area.
The swearing-in ceremony welcomed four new professionals who will bolster emergency response capabilities and reinforce public safety efforts throughout the township.
Residents gathered at the fire station to witness what many called an emotional and inspiring moment for the Plumstead community.
Long committed to volunteer service, the township now joins neighboring municipalities like Fire Department Doylestown PA in establishing a staffed presence, acknowledging growing demand for rapid, consistent emergency coverage.
The crew—working under Fire Chief William Weigman—will operate alongside seasoned volunteers, uniting decades of tradition with a commitment to modern readiness.
This blend of old and new is fueling hope and, for some residents, a sense of security that brings meaningful peace of mind.
Director of Public Safety David Mettin emphasized the urgency behind this move, noting that call volumes and response expectations have changed dramatically in recent years.
Unlike past decades, fire emergencies and rescue calls are no longer rare events—they are a fact of daily life for Plumstead Township.
The new firefighters will staff the station weekdays, working in close coordination with local volunteers to maximize coverage and resources.
This model, now more common in Bucks County, reflects a larger trend as communities like Doylestown and its neighbors respond to regional development and growing populations.
The Plumstead Township Fire Department will operate from the Plumsteadville Fire Station, using the current fleet and equipment but bringing new hands and fresh perspectives to the front lines of community safety.
Officials have pointed to the enhanced protection and rapid response times as a vital upgrade for the township, saying, residents deserve dependable fire protection Doylestown PA and beyond.
As new homes, businesses, and recreational facilities spring up in the region, the timing of this move could not have been better, according to local leaders.
With this bold step, Plumstead signals its readiness to meet the future head-on, blending tradition with professionalism to keep neighbors safe. |

Nice to see positive news about the township for once. Congrats to all four of the new hires and to the volunteers who built this department into what it is.
Four firefighters on weekdays is a start but I really hope they expand to nights and weekends as the budget allows. That is when a lot of emergencies happen.
Other townships should be watching how Plumstead handles this. Could be a model for smaller communities dealing with growth.
My neighbor is one of the volunteers and he says he fully supports having paid staff. Says it takes pressure off everyone. That was good to hear.
I will believe the response time improvements when I see actual data. Not doubting the effort just want to see real numbers eventually.
Really glad Chief Weigman is leading this. He knows this community and I trust him to make the transition work.
Bucks County is growing whether people like it or not. This kind of investment in public safety has to keep pace with that growth.
I remember when the Plumsteadville volunteers ran everything with like a dozen guys and a couple trucks. Different world now.
Watched the ceremony on the township Facebook page. Very cool moment for Plumstead. Those guys looked ready.
Good move. Response time is everything in a fire. Every minute counts and having someone already at the station makes a real difference.
I wonder what the cost is to the township for four full time firefighters. Salaries, benefits, gear. It adds up. Hope there was a solid budget plan behind this.
Makes sense with all the building going on around Route 611. That stretch alone has changed so much in the last five years.
The volunteers in this township have given so much over the decades. I hope they still feel valued and not pushed aside by this change.
Congrats to the four new firefighters. Tough job and glad someone is willing to do it.
Four people is a good start but is that really enough coverage for the whole township? Just asking.
I live right off Stump Road and honestly I feel a lot better knowing there will be someone staffed at the station during the day when most people are at work.
Hope the full timers and the volunteers actually work well together. That can be a tricky dynamic.
Director Mettin is right that things have changed. We have so many new developments going up around here. More people means more calls, simple as that.
Doylestown went through this same transition a while back and it worked out fine. Plumstead will be okay.
Weekdays only though? What happens on nights and weekends, the volunteers still cover that?
My dad was a volunteer with Plumsteadville for 30 years. He always said the day would come when they needed paid staff. Bittersweet to see it but necessary.
Chief Weigman has been pushing for this for years from what I understand. Glad it finally happened.
About time honestly. Call volume has gone up so much in recent years and the volunteers were stretched thin.
I was at the swearing in and it really was emotional. Proud of these four for stepping up for our community.
Great news for Plumstead but I have the same question a lot of people are asking. Does this mean the volunteers are being phased out eventually?
