Why State Street Keeps Closing (and What Comes Next) |
The payoff is the first full repaving since the 1990s. |

📅 Now through Friday, December 4 ⏰ Closures 9 a.m.–3 p.m. and 6 p.m.–6 a.m. 📍 State Street and Main Street, Doylestown Borough
If it feels like the detour signs move every time you drive downtown, you're not imagining it.
Three projects are overlapping, and they're connected.
First, the gas lines.
PECO is replacing gas mains under State and Main streets, closing one section at a time.
Depending on the day, that could be State between Clinton and Hamilton, Hamilton and Main, or Main and Donaldson, or Main between State and Court.
Local access stays open, and the posted detours use Court, Clinton, Ashland, Pine and Oakland.
Then, the new pavement.
PennDOT began repaving State Street end to end in late July.
It's the street's first full resurfacing since the 1990s, and the state is paying for all of it.
The stretch between Ashland and Court gets paved last, once PECO is done underneath.
Also coming: a state-funded upgrade to the six-way intersection of West State, West Court and Clinton streets, scheduled for this fall.
The Borough hasn't posted a street-by-street schedule, so check 511PA.com before you head in.
Give yourself a few extra minutes, and shops are open throughout.

December 4 cannot come soon enough. That is all.
Good reminder that the shops are open. Stopped into a few places on State yesterday and they seemed pretty slow. Support local while you can get there.
Court Street has been getting a lot of extra traffic this week. Takes twice as long to get through that light now.
State Street is going to look amazing once this is all finished. Just have to survive the next few weeks.
Brian OakesThat six-way intersection upgrade is what I'm really waiting on. That thing has been a nightmare for years.
Just want to say the workers out there have been polite every time I've had to ask for directions through the closure. Appreciate the effort.
I just detour around the whole downtown now and do my errands elsewhere until this is done. Not worth the stress.
State Street needed this repaving so badly. I blew a tire on that stretch two years ago. Worth the headache.
Santarsiero getting credit for the six way intersection upgrade. Classic.
Glad someone finally wrote this up clearly. I had no idea all three projects were connected. Makes way more sense now.
Three separate projects at once. Who approved this timeline? Just asking.
Oak Street and Pine have been slammed as alternate routes. Those side streets are not built for that kind of traffic volume.
It's a fair point, the detour routes were designed for access, not volume, and several weeks of rerouted traffic on residential side streets is a real strain that goes beyond what those roads were built to handle.
My GPS kept trying to send me down a closed block of Main. Turned off the GPS and just figured it out old school.
Walked down for dinner last night and honestly it wasn't that bad on foot. If you can walk in just do that.
The gas main work is the real wildcard here. PECO always takes longer than they say they will.
Doylestown Borough really needs to post a day by day schedule somewhere. Checking 511PA every morning gets old real quick.
Good. Do it now before the holiday shopping rush really kicks in. Get it over with.
Steve PaulinoThat's what I keep telling people. A few rough weeks now beats tearing everything up in November when the shops are packed.
I live right off Clinton and the local access staying open has been a lifesaver. Didn't even realize how bad it was until my sister tried to visit.
My kid has a dentist on Main near Court and we had to circle for 15 minutes just to get there last week. It is a lot.
We hear you, local access is technically supposed to stay open throughout the PECO closures, so if you hit a block, it's worth trying Court or Clinton as your approach to that stretch of Main.
511PA is actually pretty useful once you figure it out. Worth bookmarking if you drive through Doylestown regularly.
Absolutely, 511PA.com is the most reliable way to check conditions before you head in, since the Borough hasn't published a street-by-street daily schedule.
At least they finally confirmed the Ashland to Court section gets done last. That answers a question I had for weeks.
The closures being 6pm to 6am is rough for anyone trying to grab dinner downtown. Restaurants have to be hurting.
Three projects at once seems like poor planning. Why not coordinate these things so they happen one at a time?
The section between Hamilton and Main has been the worst stretch this week. Total chaos around lunchtime.
My question is what happens to parking during all this. Half the spots on State are just cones right now.
Please people just use 611 and avoid downtown entirely until December. Your blood pressure will thank you.
Went to one of the shops on State last week and parking was actually easier than usual with less traffic. Silver lining I guess.
A genuine silver lining, shops are open throughout the project, and if lighter through-traffic is making parking easier, that's one small upside worth noting.
Elaine S.Ha I noticed that too. Found a spot on Court with no problem. Usually I'd circle for ten minutes on a Saturday.
The detour through Pine and Oakland is fine if you know the neighborhood. If you don't it gets confusing fast.
Nobody told the delivery trucks. Watched three of them sitting there blocking Clinton for a good ten minutes this morning.
Lived here 20 years and that road needed this badly. Worth a few weeks of headaches.
Can someone explain what is happening at Ashland and Court specifically? That part of the article lost me.
Been going to lunch on State Street for years and this week was the first time I just gave up and parked on Ashland. Not the end of the world but still annoying.
Told my husband to take Oakland instead of Court this week and it saved us probably 15 minutes. Just passing that along.
I appreciate that the state is covering the cost of the repaving. At least our tax dollars are doing something visible for once.
Why are PECO and PennDOT not coordinating better so this all happens at the same time instead of dragging it out for months?
511PA actually helped me this morning. Checked it before leaving and avoided the whole mess on Main.
The six way intersection at West State and Clinton is a nightmare on a normal day. Cannot imagine what the upgrade construction is going to be like.
First full repaving since the 1990s?? That explains a lot honestly.
Good to know the shops are still open. I was worried my Saturday trip to get coffee downtown was going to be a whole ordeal.
Drove through yesterday and had no idea which way to go. The detour signs were pointing in three different directions at once.
December 4 cannot come soon enough. This stretch is brutal every single morning.
Hang in there, the December 4 end date covers the PECO gas main work, and once that wraps up, the final paving between Ashland and Court can be completed.
My husband works on Hamilton and says the crews are actually moving pretty fast. Fingers crossed they finish before the holidays.
Barb M.That's actually reassuring to hear. I was worried this was going to drag into December. Hoping they can wrap up the PECO portion before Thanksgiving week.
Tried Court Street as a detour and it backed up pretty bad around noon. Just a heads up for anyone planning to go through.
greg_localGood to know, thanks. I've been cutting down Oakland instead and it's been okay so far. Might be worth trying if Court is backing up.
At least the state is footing the bill for the repaving. That part is actually good news.
It really is, state funding for a full end-to-end resurfacing means no local tax dollars, which is a meaningful win for a project this size.
PECO has been at this for weeks. My commute is adding like 20 minutes each way.
Appreciate the heads up but the borough really should post a day by day schedule. Checking 511PA every morning is a lot to ask.
Carol Ann H.Totally agree. Even just a simple weekly update on the borough Facebook page would help. Not everyone thinks to check 511PA before a quick errand run.
That six way intersection at West State and Clinton is an absolute mess on a normal day. Cannot imagine it during construction.
You're not wrong, that six-way intersection is complicated even on a quiet Tuesday, which is part of why the state-funded upgrade was scheduled for fall rather than mid-project chaos.
The 1990s. So this road has not been properly done in like 30 years and people are surprised it needed work?
Exactly right, the last full resurfacing was in the 1990s, which is why PennDOT prioritized State Street for this project, and why the state is covering the entire cost.
Good to know the shops are still open. Was worried my usual lunch spot would be cut off.
Drove through yesterday and had no idea where I was supposed to go. The detour signs are all over the place.
Linda MarshSame experience here. I just followed another car and hoped for the best. The signs around the Clinton intersection especially are really confusing.
Finally repaving State Street. That road has been a disaster since I can remember.
Dave T.Right? I remember hitting those potholes back in like 2008 and thinking surely they'll fix it soon. Only took another 18 years lol.
